This selection of chardonnay and sauvignon blanc grapes shows how an excellent white wine can be produced on land more traditionally dedicated to the production of red grapes. Picked when fully ripe, the chardonnay grapes bring body and complexity, while the sauvignon contribute freshness and acidity. The small French oak barrels, where part of the wine ferments and fines for about 9 months, give a pleasant and subtle toasted note.
Made entirely from native grape varieties, chiefly Sangiovese with the addition of Colorino and Pugnitello, this is typical, medium-bodied Chianti Classico with marked personality of particular elegance. Vinification follows the traditional sequence, with medium-length meceration, followed by ageing for 12 months in Slavonian oak ovals.
Medium textured, largely silt-sand with some clay, on sandstone and calcareous marl. Twelve-day maceration at 28-30°C, and malolactic fermentation in steel vats. Maturation for 12 months in large Slavonian oak casks, followed by a further 2 months in bottle.
A grape variety traditional to the Maremma, vermentino achieves ideal ripeness in these hills, thanks to the nearby Mediterranean, which tempers the hot weather, particularly in the autumn. A small amount of sauvignon blanc confers on the wine increased aromatic complexity and a sturdier structure, and the result is an appealing, easy-drinking white.
Only the best sangiovese grapes selected from the estates's Chianti Classico vineyards go into this reserve, ehich is a judicious of tradition and modernity. Matured for 24 months in wood, 20% of which is in the form of barriques, and one year in the bottle. The label depicts a fomours painting by Titian, called 'Man in Armour'.
Medium red. Cherry, plum, underbrush, licorice and herbs on the nose; hints at a liqueur-like ripeness. Very sweet and pliant, even glyceral, on entry, but strong, integrated acidity gives the middle palate a penetrating quality. Just a hint of raisiny ripeness here but the wine's liqueur-like sweetness gives it significant early appeal and the stuffing for mid-term development. Finishes with substantial building, ripe tannins and plenty of acidity.
